January, 1970
Since arriving at Penn State Univ. in June 1969, I kept an unfamiliar diary.
The important entries for 1969 were lost, but I found the ones for 1970.
January is recorded almost day by day, but February and onward are patchy.

Last night, New Year's Eve, at midnight, I celebrated the New Year
with the Wald family, toasting with cherry juice.
During the Christmas break, I stayed in St. Paul, Minnesota, starting the
18th of last month (December 1969). From the 25th, I was staying with the
family of Mrs. Hideko and Mr. Eugene Wald (their daughter is Linda). Today,
New Year's Day, I am scheduled to return to Pennsylvania State University
(Penn State).
Woke up at 11:00. Lunch was a whole roasted duck... not very tasty.
At 16:00, the family of three drove me to the bus terminal.
Departed for Penn State Univ. at 17:30.
Arrived in Chicago at 2:00 AM. Bought a Christie novel. The female clerk (around 40) was extremely grumpy.

The bus took a long break in Cleveland en route. I squeezed in a visit to a Chinese restaurant during the break, but it was closed.
Finally arrived in State College, Pennsylvania (the town of Penn State University) at 10:30 PM.

Met Mark, back from Florida. He was deeply tanned. He boasted at length,
gI met Irene Papas and she treated me to a homemade meal at her villa.h
Well, since Irene Papas is an international actress and a Greek hero, Mark's
bragging isn't unreasonable.
He also excitedly talked about the Orange Bowl in Florida, a New Year's tradition. |

Went to My (a snack bar) with Mark, inviting Jan (a Polish exchange student) along.

January 17 (Saturday)
Took Mark's beat-up Beetle (Volkswagen) to Bellefonte, a town near Pittsburgh (with Jan).
(...Come to think of it, he kept saying, gI can help you get the Driver's License for $10.00.h)

Invited Mark to see gThe Naked Islandh (directed by Kaneto Shindo).
Everyone cried, deeply moved. Mark and I too.
Afterwards, to My's. Met up with Gus and the others.
Mark's enthusiastic praise of gThe Naked Islandh was eloquent.
