2. Visit Pittsburgh in winter

Saturday, January 31st
State College → Pittsburgh
Had to catch the 8:00 AM Greyhound to Pittsburgh, so woke up at 7:00.

At 7:45, I thought I'd reached the bus stop, only to find it had moved 1.5 miles away. There was absolutely no sign of this when I came during New Year's! No choice but to walk. Took 30 minutes. Naturally, I missed the 8:00 bus. The next one was at 10:30.

I'd told Section Chief T I'd arrive at 2 PM, so I had to let him know I'd be late... I tried calling twice in State College, twice in Lewistown, and once somewhere else. No connection.

Arrived in Pittsburgh at 4 PM. Called him up immediately, finally got through. Since I was late anyway, I got a haircut and met Mr. T at 5 PM.

He was wearing a long underwear. Suntory whiskey on the desk. I accepted a cigarette Highlight. About 20 Sunkist oranges were placed there. He said he bought them at the supermarket. We ate them together.

Relaxed, had a glass of Suntory with anchovies as a snack. Then went out. Couldn't find a Japanese restaurant, so went to a Chinese place. On the way, Mr. T bought bourbon. Ate Chinese food to our hearts' content with beer.

Stayed at T's place. Webster Motor Hotel

February 1 (Sun) Pittsburgh

TさんMr. T showed me around Carnegie Mellon University. Enjoyed the beautiful view from the hill on campus.

Visited a Catholic church. Went to the Carnegie Museum of Art.
T-san said this was his “third time” here. Spent about two hours viewing the exhibits.

Wandered around town together. The architectural beauty of Pittsburgh University's modern dorm buildings left an impression. In contrast, there were also clusters of buildings marred by air pollution. Had Chinese food (fried rice) again today. Parted ways at 4 PM.

As we parted, he gave me a book he brought from Japan:

“The Economics of Decision Making ”
by Kimio Miyagawa.

Arrived at the University Club (dorm) at 11 PM.

T-san is deeply
knowledgeable about art.
He took my photos
around the campus.

February 5 (Thu)

Went with Mark to Schwab on campus to watch Kurosawa's film “Yojimbo”. Went to My afterwards.

February 6 (Fri)

Van Cliburn concert at the Auditorium. Went with Mark.
Due to heavy snow, Mr. Cliburn arrived an hour late.
Perhaps because of this, he played encores until 11:30 PM.
As we two were moved, saying “It was amazing,” Frank said the merciless thing, “It wasn't good at all.”
