5. Visit Washington DC in March
|
Tuesday, March 24 Washington, DC
7:30 AM: Woke up.
Had breakfast at a cafeteria along the way, then headed straight to Gray Line.
9:40 AM: Bus Tour “A” departed. 52 participants.
| US Capitol |
The beauty inside the US Capitol dome – truly befitting the United States Capitol. |
| White House |
Since it's near the YMCA, I've seen the exterior since yesterday,
but the interior is also magnificent. Statues and portraits of past presidents
|
| Lincoln Memorial |
Reflection Pool, its white stucco gleaming. The view of the Washington
Monument and Capitol from here is also beautiful. |
|
|
Arlington National Cemetery & the Tomb
of the Unknown, Christ Church, Mt. Vernon
Lunch at Hagate's Restaurant. Ordered deep-sea fish.
Arlington National Cemetery & the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Christ Church, Mt. Vernon
|
| Marine Corps War Memorial |
Magnificent view |
Got so caught up in taking photos I was late getting back to the bus, earning the shameful label of No. 52.
18:00
Tour complete. The bus literally raced through the sights. Washington is just too amazing. I'm so glad I came.
Spaghetti and beer at a nearby restaurant.
19:30
Returned to Y. Feet felt like sticks. Feet were swollen inside my shoes. Walked a lot. Tired. Had a glass of Whitehorse bought at Liquare Store with orange and anchovies.

March 25 (Wed) Washington DC
8:00
Woke up. Maybe from drinking Whitehorse straight last night, my head hurts a bit. Can't waste precious time lying in bed, so I washed my face.
Breakfast: last night's orange and potato chips.
9:30 Left Y.
| Corcoran Art Gallery |
I'm not much into art, but it felt pretty good. |
| Pan-American Union |
Took a break in the basement. ... 3 eggs (32 cents), Coke (10 cents) |
| Washington Monument |
10 cents. Better view than the St. Louis Arch. |
| Freer Art Gallery |
Lots of Japanese paintings. |
| Smithsonian Institute |
Detailed exhibits on Apollo and the moon. Want to show this to Michiko (eldest daughter). |
| Botanic Gardens |
Fairytale-like beauty. |
Past 2 PM,
hungry and tired. Spaghetti at an Italian restaurant. |
| Library of Congress |
Solemn library, toured for about 20 minutes. |
| Supreme Court |
They showed us the entire proceedings. Both the exterior and the solemn interior are impressive. |
| Capitol |
Bought the guidebook I forgot yesterday. ($1.00) |
| National Gallery of Art |
What an incredible collection! It also has great dignity. I want to come back many times. |
| National Museum |
Reminded me of the Denver Museum. I want to show this to Yoshiko. |
Nighttime already. Had dumplings, fried rice, and beer at Beijing Tower.

Washington, D.C. → Harrisburg
10:00 Check out
Breakfast at Kay's. Stored heavy luggage in lockers at the Greyhound bus terminal. Bought camera batteries and film.
Visited Ford's Theatre and The Place Where Lincoln Died. Nothing particularly
memorable.
Visited the National Museum again. Wanted to show it to Yoshiko.
Visited the National Gallery of Art until 2:30 p.m. Liked Raphael. Tired.
Missed the 2:15 PM bus, so next one is 5:15 PM. Fried rice at Am Chi.
Black guys hanging out in front of the bus stop begged for my camera. Pretended not to know them when they talked to me.
8:30 PM
Arrived in Harrisburg. The bus to State College had already left. No choice
but to stay one night. Checked into Hotel Plaza. $6.40, no other option.
The room was filthy. No toilet or shower. The shared bathroom's grime left me speechless. The hallway felt eerie. I shouldn't have stayed. Locked the door securely.

Woolworth's
で昼食。
14:45、バス発車。停留所で買ったペリーメイスンを読みながら一路State
Collegeへ。
17:00、University Club着。汚い衣服を脱ぐ。シャワー。コーヒーを沸かす。ステレオをつける。たまった手紙を読む。旅行は終わった。しめて
$116.00。
March 27 (Fri) Harrisburg → State College
Woke up at 9:30. Kept waking up all night. Traveling is fun, but lodging is a pain.
Paying $10.00 would be comfortable, but aiming to save money leads to places like Y or this hotel. Still, the Plaza was a mistake. Both the staff and the guests seemed gloomy and scary. Checking out finally felt like a relief.
The State Capitol in Harrisburg is beautiful. I went up to the top floor. Took several photos from above.
Left the Capitol and strolled along the riverbank. Entered the downtown
area. Had lunch at Woolworth's.
14:45, bus departure. Read Perry Mason, bought at the station, all the way to State College.
17:00, arrived at the University Club. Took off dirty clothes. Showered. Made coffee. Turned on the stereo. Read the accumulated mail. The trip is over. Total cost: $116.00.
