Stay two days at YMCA, 826 S. Wabash Ave., Chicago ($5.30/day)

The Chicago YMCA is right near the Hilton. The room is cramped, shared toilets and showers are unavoidable.

Learn “Hair” is playing at the Schubert Theatre. Booked the best seats ($9.00).
Want fried rice. Walk about 30 minutes toward Chinatown.

Turning right onto State St. near Chinatown, I see about ten black youths hanging out. It's in front of a twin circular apartment building. Thinking “This is bad,” I've already walked right up to them. It's a wide street, but there's no foot traffic. They call out to me. One makes a pistol gesture with his hand in his pocket. He threatens me in distinctive black slang.
That's the end of Volume 1. They snatched my precious camera, tripod and all. ...Unfortunately, I can't take photos anymore! But my passport, air ticket, wallet, and other things were safe. Maybe I was lucky after all.

Fried rice in Chinatown. Took the bus to the Schubert Theatre. Decided to choose busy streets when walking.

Hair was powerful. Jokes and dirty words came out frequently. Incredible.

May 19 (Tue) Chicago

Took the Grayline tour. The Museum of Science and Industry was great.

* The view from the Prudential Building was beautiful, contrasting the harbor and the city. 50 cents
* Almost broke. What to do about souvenirs?
* Black Panther members were selling newspapers (?) on the street.
* The city has a lot of black people. Conversely, inside the Hilton and Palmer House, except for the bellboys, it's almost all white people.
