On the first day, we stayed at the hotel Harvest Nanki Tanabe (Tanabe City)
designated by the travel agency. No bus service from Shirahama Airport.
We were forced to take a taxi.
It was surely possible to go to Shingu immediately, but we should not skip
the hotel included in the tour price for the first day's stay.
The next morning (November 23), we took the limited express Kuroshio 1
from Tanabe Station to Shingu. When we arrived there before 12 o'clock,
my brother was waiting for us at the ticket gate. He's two years younger
than me, who has reached the age of 73.
Lunch is at my brother's house, where we receive homemade hospitality from
his wife (called Nobu-yan as a nickname). My biggest favorite is the whole-fish-sushi
of Pacific saury. It's on the table because she knows that. I ate one up
quickly.
Engrossed in chatting about various topics, it's already just before 2
p.m. Our couple hurriedly go to visit my family tomb.
The cemetery is near my alma mater, Koyo Junior High School, and it is
about a 30-minute walk from my brother's house. On the way, Emiko, my wife,
bought a flower for offering.
Although for a small village, it is a large cemetery where the ancestors
of most of the residents of Miwasaki are buried. But I am not so senile
as to forget where my parents' grave is. Holding a bucketful of water with
a ladle and broom, we visit my family tomb.
Brother and Nobu-yan are neatly taking care of the grave. Thanks a lot
to them. We just add a flower and water on the tombs, offer incense sticks,
and then put our hands together. While thinking about this and that, I
was nestled in my late parents for about 30 minutes.
We arrived brother's home after 4 p.m., and were going to stay in the 2
consecutive rooms of 6 tatami mats of their careful arrangement.
Brother wants to show me the DVD from now, but I have fixed my eyes on
the furniture. Most of them are chic coloring. When did he start this hobby?
Vessels, a table, a bookshelf, a sideboard, ..... All are lacquered woodworks.
Both rooms stand out for his works.
All of us enjoyed the DVD of one hour. It is the work of Shingu City's
Traditional Art Conservation Committee with the title of "Whale Dance
of Miwasaki".
It's the proud folk dance of Miwasaki Town, and more than a dozen young
men dance with the support of festival flutes and drums.

It seems to have recently been recognized as Japan Cultural Heritage. Obviously.
As you can see, Miwasaki is also severely depopulated. It's already an
old town. Among them, the whale dance is full of enthusiasm. Young men
are in the best spirit and voice, and the dance heats up by itself. From
the Edo period until nearly a hundred years ago, the whale fishing had
been handed down from generation to generation valiantly with such tools
as harpoons and nets. The performance has been brilliantly turned into
a dance, and now it is an elegant stage art.
The video screen shows the scene in which fifth-grade elementary school
children are learning the stage art as one of their lessons. Their serious
expressions and gestures, while the atmosphere is gorgeous and steadily
handed down.
............
The two couple's banquet begins with various sumptuous dishes hand-made
by Nobu-yan from around 6:00 p.m. Hot pot dish full of Kumano beef, sushi
of Pacific saury, various kinds of local fish sashimi, ......
All four of us are over Koki (age of 70). Perhaps with the help of our
senior age, the exchange of frank conversation naturally adds to the vibrancy
of the situation. The tail fin and the depth are free to swim freely, as
they go.
Small talk and chitchat are irrelevant at this time. Starting with what
each of them is doing now, the story revolves around with the exchange
between the brothers as a linchpin.
My brother's story is wide and deep. He reads and digests old books a lot.
...... The village festival of Miwasaki, its past and present, haiku poem,
lacquerwork, "Shobogenzo" by Preast Dogen, Japanese ancient poem
collections, Basho, Buson, Ryokan, Takahama Kyoshi, rakugo, Classic music,
jazz, historic stories, etc., etc. ......
Even though he is my brother, it is the first time that he talks to me
so happily and endlessly. We talked to each other to the best of our hearts,
and our wives were also happy to get along.
Time slipped away, and it's now past 10 o'clock. The case was settled regrettably.
The next morning.
