At 2:46 pm, March 11th, 2011, when the unprecedented earthquake occurred around the Eastern Japan, I was recording the Gettysburg Address by then U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, in my room on the 11th floor of the apartment in Urayasu, Chiba.
"...... that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have
died in vain - that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom
- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall
not perish from the earth."
Including the big tsunami caused directly after the giant earthquake,
the total power of nature revealed nearly 30,000 victims in a short time.
The survived victims of more than 100,000 are still now forced to be under
the torture of losing their hope for living. The accident of the Fukushima
nuclear plants made further attacks upon them, and aftershocks have been
occurring even now. In such a case, the prospects are totally gloomy.
I made this "Famous Speeches in the US" for my own English study.
Therefore some Japanese comments and illustrative sentences of myself are
added below each address of English. Even more, every address is with my
reading in order to remember my reading ability at the time.
The work was not a piece of cake, but it was productive to me.
First, each address with impressive spirits led me to the motivation of
challenging.
Second, the relationship to that giant earthquake, just occurred during
this work, somewhat pushed me from behind.

TV, radio and newspapers have been reporting how the victims are trying
to recover under the help of volunteers in such a severe situation.
"Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for
your country." This is, as you know, a part of John F. Kennedy's address.
And now, what can I do for the victims? Poor physical strength and financial
power ...... I only have my will power.
I have come to think what I can do now is to complete this work, as, on
the contrary, I have been encouraged by the people suffering a great deal
of damage.
As each of the addresses is at the risk of individual life, it is arousing
sympathy from many in the audience. I really have the same spiritual elevation
with them, and I would very much like to let the suffering people know
my present feeling. How I wish these addresses will reach them in the future
and become one of some sources of their vitality.
It is why this work has been continuing with enthusiasm in the intervals
of aftershocks since that giant quake. I added "Youth" by Samuel
Ullman.

Whether the disaster is natural or man-made, we have to step forward.
"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step," or
"Rome was not built in a day."
When and how will each of us come to our journey's end? Who knows? We
have to obey the fate anyway, don't we?
I wish each of us will keep a life worth living. |
